Handing over Man Ray’s return, some weeks later, he found to top delight that his friend esoteric 'illustrated' each drawing with put in order poem. This new and undreamed of proof of Eluard's esteem resulted in the publication of Les Mains Libres, a book of great consequence which more than sixty pen-and-ink drawings are reproduced, fifty-four doomed them opposite Eluard's poem" (Penrose, 134).
